Predictive strain-gradient homogenization of a pantographic material with compliant junctions

چکیده

This paper presents an architectured material featuring significant strain-gradient effects and called pantographic material. It is easy to fabricate, being a plate made of single continuous linear elastic containing voids. The pattern consists triangles connected by thin junctions arranged in such way that two floppy strain modes are present. A homogenization scheme based on the two-scale asymptotic expansion suggested, keeping only contributions homogenized energy through adequate projection. predictions from validated against full-scale simulation yield very good L2 error estimates whereas classical first-gradient fails. Furthermore, relative position unit cell computation does not have influence quality prediction. Finally, with choice scalings between scale separation junction thinness, it possible ensure strains as well displacements compliant remain bounded while preserving macroscopic effects.

Two-scale Homogenization for a Model in Strain Gradient Plasticity

Using the tool of two-scale convergence, we provide a rigorous mathematical setting for the homogenization result obtained by Fleck and Willis (J. Mech. Phys. Solids, 2004) concerning the effective plastic behaviour of a strain gradient composite material. Moreover, moving from deformation theory to flow theory, we prove a convergence result for the homogenization of quasistatic evolutions in t...

Gradient - enhanced strain softening material models

Classical continuum models exhibit strong mesh dependency during strain softening. For such materials, the phenomenon may be regularized via the gradient-enhanced nonlocal formulation. The paper discusses the implicit gradient framework and demonstrates that standard nonlocal enhancement may serve only as a partial localization limiter. The over-nonlocal approach, where the weight for the nonlo...

Autonomous Construction with Compliant Building Material

In this paper, we develop an autonomous construction system in which a self-contained ground robot builds a protective barrier by means of compliant pockets (i.e., filled bags). We present a stochastic control algorithm based on two biological mechanisms (stigmergy and templates) that takes advantage of compliant pockets for autonomous construction. The control algorithm guides the robot to bui...
